Who is Petteri?
I am a 38 years old journalist, referee, sports enthusiast and a semi-serious nerd. I am running for Tampere city council as an indepent nominee with the green party in the 2021 election. In the previous election in 2017 I received 163 votes and was narrowly left out of a reserve position in the council.
Some things I am passionate about:
Mental healt services need fixing
The state of mental health services in Tampere is far from where it should be and the pandemic has made things even worse. In many cases it takes too long to get an appointment, let alone appropriate treatment. The biggest sufferers are often our young who are also the most vulnerable. Mental health services need a lot of attention and more resources in the next few years.
Let's get Tampere on rails
The brand new tramway in Tampere needs to be expanded quickly to the underserved areas of the city where the bus capacity is already struggling. We are not only fixing current problems but building a system for the coming decades when the city's population grows much larger. Local area trains are another important tool that needs to be made use of right away.
Build dense to build green
Building higher makes for a far more efficient city center. Reducing the amount of cars in the core of the city has been a good first step but we need to go much further. Historic buildings and views must be preserved but there is plenty of room for expansion upward. Making the center more dense reduces the need to move around while making the area more lively and supporting local businesses.
Students form the future
Tampere has a student population of around 35 000 and is one of Finlands most attractive cities for students. Providing them with affordable housing and good services is a priority. Students are also one of the groups most affected the pandemic and will need special attention in the near future.
Immigrants are an asset
As one of Finland’s largest cities Tampere is also one of the most popular locations for newcomers. Adapting everyone successfully to society benefits both them and the locals. I do not believe immigration is a drain of resources or a source of conflicting interests. I think everyone has the right to seek a safer and better life and we can all win in the process.
